Looking to re-do the fabric on your boat? Marine vinyl fabric is durable, weatherproof, and easy to clean. It comes in a variety of types, textures, and colors and is used for a wide array of applications, all while maintaining great durability. Before you start your next project, here’s everything you need to know about this dependable fabric.
Where It All Began
In 1872, a German chemist, Eugen Baumann, created Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), though it wasn’t patented until 1913 by Friedrich Klatte. Klatte developed a new method for the polymerization of vinyl by using sunlight. Even after the advances, vinyl was considered useless until 1926. BF Goodrich researcher, Waldo Semon, was attempting to create an adhesive to bond rubber and steel, but instead, he invented plasticized polyvinyl chloride, similar to but different than Baumann’s original concept.
The popularity of vinyl began growing during World War II when rubber was scarce. Its waterproofing properties protected wires on Navy ships, which is how it eventually transitioned into commercial applications. Today, 60% of vinyl is used by the construction industry, followed by the transportation, textiles, and packaging industries.
Today’s Marine Vinyl Fabric
Protection from the Sun
Fading colors on outdoor fabrics is a nuisance and can feel like wasted money. With marine vinyl fabric, colors are long lived because the material is UV stabilized. The sun’s rays won’t fade or alter the pigments, extending your investment in the fabric.
Not only can the sun damage your fabric, but its heat can also cause boat decks and surfaces to escalate in temperature, raising a potential threat to barefoot or unsuspecting passengers. Vinyl fabric is a great heat barrier, no matter how hot the summer days get.
Weatherproof
Rain, snow, or shine—vinyl is made for all weather conditions. During installation, the immense amount of glue used to adhere the flooring forms a waterproof, moisture-repelling seal. Even with constant exposure to humidity and moisture, your vinyl is protected from mildew or mold.
Easy to Clean
As compared to other marine fabrics, vinyl is the easiest to clean. Since it isn’t as absorbent as other fabrics, most stains can be scrubbed with soap and hosed down after each use.
Durable
The longevity of vinyl fabric is unmatched. If properly installed and maintained, it can last to anywhere from ten to twenty years. Although it’s not as durable as leather, it can withstand dents and scratches for several years.
